The point of meditation is to return to consciousness. That may sound crazy, since we feel that we’re conscious every waking moment of the day, but the kind of consciousness I’m referring to is a calm, centered, awake, aware, and joyful state of contentment. Consciousness of this quality isn’t just any waking brain activity, but a special kind of brain activity in which we feel deep connection with the nameless quality of our existence, and in which we regain a sense of the infinite joyfulness associated with just being.
For many, a guided audio meditation practice can be helpful to restore this natural state of enjoyment. The frenetic pace of modern life is the enemy of calmness and true consciousness, as each of the entanglements and binding arrangements we make is a potential source of endless mind activity, leading us to lose ourselves as we ruminate on the various complexities we’ve created or imagined. Meditation helps silence this internal voice, bringing awareness to the sensations of merely being alive and inhabiting your physical body. The conjured and imaginary dilemmas retreat to nothingness, allowing us to reconnect with our true nature: miraculous creators of our own existence.
Spiritual sex can be an extremely powerful form of meditation. The term “spiritual sex” merely refers to the complete engagement of your mind, body, and soul in the sexual union with your partner, which is a deeply intimate act, and is dramatically different than “sport sex” or less fully-involved cognitive and emotional sexual activity. A physical intimacy meditation is an extremely effective way to initiate the practice of whole-self sexual intimacy with your partner, which for many people is the most powerful meditative and consciousness-raising activity in their lives. Spiritual sexuality doesn’t necessarily imply any religious connotation, though it can also be incorporated into a more comprehensive spiritual practice.

Another form of guided meditation is yoga. In fact, many believe that yoga originated in conjunction with meditation. In its modern form, yoga is certainly a powerful way to develop physical strength, flexibility, and balance, but it can actually be a deeply meditative practice as well. As your mind focuses on the various physical postures, you learn to find joy and contentment while your body feels a mixture of vigor and discomfort. It is a fantastic way to learn the art of bringing joy into a moment, and dwelling peacefully within that moment, even when the moment itself contains elements that are both restorative and uncomfortable at the same time.
While a guided imagery meditation practice is a powerful too to change your life, you’ll get the best results when you incorporate elevated consciousness into other activities as well. And yoga and sex go amazingly well with a guided meditation practice.
